the atmospheric sciences research center (ASRC)

The ASRC, created in 1961, is a college-level research center at the State University of New York at Albany. ASRC is currently located in the CESTM (Center for Emerging Sciences & Technology Management) facility of the SUNY Polytechnic campus. However, in early 2021, ASRC is within the University at Albany’s new Emerging Technology & Entrepreneurship Complex (ETEC). ETEC houses ASRC, the University’s Department of Atmospheric & Environmental Science (DAES), the New York State Mesonet, and the University’s College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC).

Research and development at ASRC spans a broad spectrum of scientific areas, including: renewable energy; advanced sensor development; laboratory and field experiments in atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric physics, and aerosol microphysics; remote sensing of the environment; global aerosol forecasting, air quality, climate change and atmospheric modeling to name a few.

ASRC is also home to the ExTREME Collaboration, Innovation & Technology (xCITE) laboratory. xCITE is a multidisciplinary collaboration space designed to bring together software experts, scientific researchers, and public/private partners to develop innovative tools and products to solve demanding weather related problems today and into the future. xCITE also provides training and outreach services, as well as research into high performance computing, data analytics, machine learning, and advanced scientific visualization.
